Dr .S.G Ramanan talks about Cancer Awareness in Tamil
Cancer Screening Camp conducted on 23rd March 2019 in collaboration with Single Teacher Schools
Free Cancer Screening program was conducted at Ramathandalam Village in Thiruvallur district on the 23rd of March, in collaboration with Single Teachers School. As part of the program, an awareness talk about cancer was given by Dr Kanimozhi and our psychologist, Mr Dayanandan.
In order to assess the villagers' awareness about the disease, Mr Dayanandan also handed out forms to the villagers, which were filled out by them with the assistance of the Acharyas of Single Teacher School.
A total of 55 people were screened. 4 of them needed further investigations, which will be taken care of by Cancare Foundation.

Cancer Screening Camp conducted on 19th January 2019 in association with Single Teacher Schools
Cancer Screening Camp in association with Single Teacher Schools was conducted at Nelvoy Village in Poondi on 19th January 2019. Dr.Janarthinakani and Dr.Kanimozhi along with their team screened the villagers. The following are the details of the same.
- Total Persons Screened - 87
- Males - 22
- Females - 65
Persons advised to come for further diagnosis - 11
- Females - 5 / Mammogram
- Females - 5 / Ultrasonogram
- Male - 1 / For the oral cavity
These people are advised for a further checkup by next week in Chennai
Cancare Foundation in association with Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society conducted Cancer Screening Camp on 1st December 2018 at Nedumbaram Village at Tiruvalankadu Sanch. Cancare Foundation Dr.KaniMozhi with her team Screened 57 persons. Out of which Male - 2 and Female - 55. Six persons advised to come for further investigations.
Cancare Foundation is all set to open a full-fledged Palliative Care Centre in VHS - The Voluntary Health Service Hospital. We had a small Inaugural function on the 27th November 2018.
Cancare Foundation's services comprise 2 aspects:-
- Home care services where trained nurses visit the terminally-ill cancer patients' homes to provide the necessary treatment and supportive care.
- Running a Palliative care centre where cancer patients who are in need of palliation are housed and given the appropriate care.
Having successfully run such a centre in Kilpauk, Cancare Foundation with the support of its donors and well wishers, is now all set to establish one in the southern part of the city.
Cancare Foundation specially thanks Cognizant Foundation for readily sponsoring the purchase of all the equipment required for the centre.
Seen in the pictures are our committed team members which include our skilled nurses, palliative care physician and Onco-psychologist, Cancare's Oncologists and Trustees along with the administrative members of VHS.
Cancer screening camp was conducted on 22nd September 2018. Aswarevanthapuram primary school at SriKalikapuram village. The camp was supported by Cancare Foundation Doctors with their team screened the Patients. Single Teacher Schools staff made necessary arrangements for conducting the camp in the village.

In the fight against cancer, Cancare Foundation along with its sister NGO, Cancer Research and Relief Trust, is involved in various activities for the creation of public awareness - Cancer Screening and Awareness talks being prime among them. With the lab and technical support of Anderson Lab, Kilpauk, we regularly conduct Cancer screening programs, completely free of cost for the public.
Screen-detected cancers are early in stage and hence more amenable to curative treatment. Screening is done for early detection and prevention of cancers of the cervix, breast and oral cavity.
Our team had recently purchased a hand-held breast scanning equipment to help identify and assess breast abnormalities. It is utilized by our paramedical staff during all our community screening programs and is effective in an environment where such resources are not available.
Here are our Screening programs over the last 6 months -
On the 8th of September - Screening program was conducted in collaboration with Rotary Club at Villivakkam, with an overall registration of 45 with 42 pap smear.
At Kolli Hills, we conducted a program on the 26th of August where we screened 103 people from the community. 42 pap smears were done.
On 18th August we had two programs with an overall registration of 67 persons and 31 pap smears were done.
- With Single teacher's school at Ramalingapuram village Tiruvallur.
- With Rotary Club at Shivasankari, Ayanavaram. A Cancer awareness programe was also conducted by our Psycho oncologist at Ayanavaram.
On the 11th of August we had a screening program in collaboration with Rotary Club in Padikuppam near Mugappair West. Overall registration was 31; 29 pap smear
On the 14th of July, we conducted screening at Omyal Achi Community health centre with a cancer awareness talk for their staff nurses. 24persons had registered for screening
On the 26th of May our screening program was in collaboration with Oasis, at Kannigapuram, Vyasarpadi. Registration - 27
On the 19th of May we had a screening program at a corporate office in Teynampet - Roof and Floor
On April 7th, we conducted the program at Thirukazhukundram. It was organised bt Single Teacher School. We had an overall registration of 68 and pap smear was done for 57.
Screening program was conducted by us for 'Chinathirai' actors on the 31st of March in Saligramam Nadigarsangam building
On the 11th of March we conducted free screening near Vysarpadi market with a total of 43 registrations
An Awareness lecture on Cancer was given by our Founder Trustee, Dr S G Ramanan at Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore on the 8th of March
Cancer Screening Camp @ Ammampakkam Village
Cancer Screening Camp through Single Teacher School was conducted in Ammampakkam near Seethanjeri village of Thiruvallur District on 16th December 2017 (Saturday).
The camp started at 10.30 am and 63 women above the age of 35 years were screened of Oral cancer, Cervix cancer and Breast cancer and advised accordingly by team of Dr Janarthinakani and his colleagues.
The villagers expressed their sincere thanks to Cancare Foundation Team for bringing the Cancer Screening Camp to their door step free of cost.
Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society
Cancare Foundation conducted the Cancer Screening Camp in association with Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, Chennai for the Single Teacher Schools Project for their 2nd Group of Teachers in their training center, Ulundai on 18th November 2017 (Saturday).
Dr. Janarthinakani spoke beautifully about the causes and symptoms of Cancer to 170 Teachers who were present there, as a part of the awareness programme which was followed by PPT presentation which shows various aspects of prevention.
As a part of the Screening Programme, we identified 65 Teachers above the age of 35 who were screened for Cervix, Breast, and Oral Cancer by Cancer Foundation team.

Dr. Ayyappan was a panelist in Management of metastatic rectal cancers Controversies in the management of low rectal cancers
Dr. Vikas Mahajan was a panelist in Extended Hepato biliary resections He also participated in HIpec workshops.
Dr. Ramanan was in a debate regarding In-Patient Hospice Care in India vs Home-based palliative care in which he explained the Cancare model of home care.

Single Teacher Schools
Single Teacher Schools is an organization committed to educating rural children in difficult-to-reach villages of interior Tamil Nadu.
Under the auspices of Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, Cancare Foundation had the opportunity to conduct a Cancer Awareness talk and Free cancer screening camp on the 14th of October at Vayalur village.
Cancare Foundation is honored to be associated with this organization and its members who are dedicated to serving the community.
Nursing Conference
Committed to disseminating knowledge and to create an awareness among nurses about Supportive and Palliative Care in the field of Oncology, Cancare Foundation conducted its 2nd Nursing Conference at Tag Centre, Alwarpet on the 7th of October. The program which commemorates World Palliative Care Day was well attended by nurses and Faculty from many hospitals and nursing colleges in and around Chennai.
Staff Nurses - Communication Workshop
Staff nurses of Cancare Foundation attended a Communication Workshop not only to improve their communication skills with patients but also to handle their own emotions since their work involves a lot of stress as they are dealing with terminally-ill patients and where loss of life is a common occurrence.
The workshop was very ably conducted by Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, Psychologist, and Counselor.

Cancare Foundation and Madras Cancer Care Foundation conducted the meeting to update non-oncologists on recent advances and developments in the field of Oncology and Palliative Care
Cancer Screening Programs
Free cancer screening program was conducted by our Cancare Foundation and CRRT team, for the villagers of Puliyur in Javadu Hills, Tiruvannamalai Dist. , on 13th of August. The program was organized by Atma Foundation.
Cancare Foundation and CRRT conducted a free screening program at koduvalli village near Puzhal on the 12th of August. The program was organized by Omayal Aachi College of Nursing. With the able support provided for free once again by Anderson Lab, Kilpauk, 74 men and women were screened for oral and breast cancers.
Tobacco Awareness Camp
Cancare Foundation and Cancer Research & Relief Trust have initiated school-based programs for young adolescents, laying emphasis on the ills of tobacco, the need for complete avoidance of tobacco initiation and thereby the subsequent difficulties of trying to quit.

A clinic that takes the sting out of pain for chronically ill
Conference on Pain and Palliative Care
Conference on Pain and Palliative Care On October 1st 2016 - with over 150 registration from doctors and paramedical staff and with positive feed back from all our participants, the One-day conference was a grand success. Well known experts in their respective fields as faculty in the program, added to the success of the event.
Speakers shared varied perspectives on how best to deliver care to patients with advanced cancer. The workshop covered all the aspects of palliative care and focused on practical skills in End-of-Life Care.
VIZHIPPU
Cancare Foundation had its first bereavement group gathering on the 30th of April at Hotel Maris. It was a unique support group meeting where those who lost their loved ones to cancer, shared their experiences. They spoke about the grieving process, the overwhelming emotions faced by them and coping with the loss. Although the atmosphere was sombre during the start of the program, as they shared their journey through grief, it was obvious that many had found inner strength to come through this experience. Some even expressed the need to have a meaningful focus in life to move on and lead a life as normal as possible, even while missing the person who has gone.
- As the name of the event `VIZHIPPU' suggests, it was in deed a moment of awakening for many who were present, including the staff of Cancare Foundation.
- Our thanks to Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar for explaining the process of bereavement and for her valuable tips to come out of grief.
- Our thanks to Nalini, for the lovely musical rendition which helped lighten the mood.
ONCOLOGY TEACHING MODULES
Cancare Foundation regularly conducts educational programs to orient those interested in the profession of nursing towards oncology and palliative care to stimulate as many as possible to take up oncology nursing as their chosen goal.
The doctors associated with Cancare Foundation impart knowledge on a wide range of topics, including Nursing Care in cancer, Pain Relief, Counseling and simple procedures in Palliative Care.
FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIONS
Our Palliative Care Specialist with a full team of nursing staff is conducting these. These group interactions will help the team members to give their opinions and feedback about how patients receive our services and how it can be further improved.
Teaching Programs for Nursing College students
To fulfill its commitment in the field of education, Cancare Foundation has conducted (and intends to continue) Teaching Programs for Nursing College students covering a wide range of topics including nursing care in cancer, providing pain relief, counselling and also, simple procedures in palliative care. This educational program will help orient the students to the subject and even stimulate a few to take palliative care as their profession

Cancare organized a fund-raiser show featuring Sudha Raghunathan on the theme 'Om Shivoham' on 23rd August 2014 in Chennai. Funds raised from this event are being used to provide effective treatment to cancer patients.
Alarmel Valli's Bharatnatyam Performance, September 2013
Cancare organized Bharatnatyam performance by veteran danseuse Alarmel Valli at Music Academy, Chennai. It was a poetic tribute to Bhakti poet Annamacharya titled "Is there some way I can reach you?" Poem readings were done by poet Arundhathi Subramanium.
Aruna Sairam Concerts held in Chennai, July 2012, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Vizag, Rajamundry – February 2013 and in Bangalore, March 2013
Cancare organized a fund-raiser show featuring Aruna Sairam. It was a fusion concert titled 'Lalitha- The Divine Mother Goddess with a 1000 Venerable Names.' Funds raised from this event were used to provide effective treatment to cancer patients.
Jugalbandhi concert, Chennai, August 2010.
Cancare organized a ‘jugalbandhi' concert featuring Malladi Brothers and Gundecha Brothers. The concert was a fundraiser event featuring the noted Carnatic vocal duo Malladi Sreeramaprasad and Malladi Ravikumar and leading Dagarvani Dhrupad singers, Umakant Gundecha and Ramkant Gundecha. The event was not just a convergence of two different styles, but also that of four robust voices with distinctly different tones.
Event was very well-received by the audience present.
Cancare Foundation organises music concerts of eminent musicians from time to time to raise funds for extending palliative care. Here are a few glimpses of the fund raiser events held.

- Covered over 4000 remote villages such as Uriyur, Tiruvalankadu, Arigilpadi, Kadambanallur, Illupaithandalam, Puliamangalam Village, Kanniyambakkam, Velur Village etc.
