In the fight against cancer, Cancare Foundation along with its sister NGO, Cancer Research and Relief Trust, is involved in various activities for the creation of public awareness - Cancer Screening and Awareness talks being prime among them. With the lab and technical support of Anderson Lab, Kilpauk, we regularly conduct Cancer screening programs, completely free of cost for the public.

Screen-detected cancers are early in stage and hence more amenable to curative treatment. Screening is done for early detection and prevention of cancers of the cervix, breast and oral cavity.

Our team had recently purchased a hand-held breast scanning equipment to help identify and assess breast abnormalities. It is utilized by our paramedical staff during all our community screening programs and is effective in an environment where such resources are not available.

VIZHIPPU

Cancare Foundation had its first bereavement group gathering on the 30th of April at Hotel Maris. It was a unique support group meeting where those who lost their loved ones to cancer, shared their experiences. They spoke about the grieving process, the overwhelming emotions faced by them and coping with the loss. Although the atmosphere was sombre during the start of the program, as they shared their journey through grief, it was obvious that many had found inner strength to come through this experience. Some even expressed the need to have a meaningful focus in life to move on and lead a life as normal as possible, even while missing the person who has gone.

  • As the name of the event `VIZHIPPU' suggests, it was in deed a moment of awakening for many who were present, including the staff of Cancare Foundation.
  • Our thanks to Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar for explaining the process of bereavement and for her valuable tips to come out of grief.
  • Our thanks to Nalini, for the lovely musical rendition which helped lighten the mood.

Remote monitoring
Cancare foundation is working on a concept known as "hospital at home" or virtual ward.

Various pilot studies were done on this internationally during the covid period. This is an extension of the home-based care which we are already providing. Here we are in the process of using equipment to monitor the patients' vital signs in their homes and the same is captured via internet or mobile at our Command centre located in our department at VHS hospital, where trained staff members continuously monitor the status of the patients' health condition.

Abnormal vital signs picked up by our staff alert the patient’s family, thereby helping them to seek the necessary treatment or reach the hospital emergency.M.C.C (1)

Leukemia

Leukemia or blood cancer in layman’s terms is one of the life threatening and fatal type of cancer. Affecting children and young adults, this type is now highly curable with the help of Hemato oncologists and dedicated support staff. Treatment may vary from 6 months to 2 years and cost up to 15 lakhs in corporate hospitals due to long stay, drugs, antibiotics, ICU stay and doctor & staff fee.

Our free boarding and lodging facility, pro bono service by doctors and cost-effective drugs acquired through National Cancer Grid makes the cost considerably lower. Cancare is looking at expanding its leukemia services to reach out to more patients. Financial support for blood and blood work will enable us to treat many more needy patients.
